Unexpected Collage

Using Color to Create Mood

Students will create collages using a mix of materials, like paper, photos, and found objects, to explore color theory, mood, and balance.

They will collect and glue different colors onto a mat board for semi-realistic artwork, with the option to include unique items like tea bags, sheet music, maps, barcodes, gum wrappers etc...

Creativity and experimentation with materials are key.

Drawing from life trains artists to observe the world accurately, focusing on forms, proportions, and perspective. This skill helps young artists notice details that photos often miss, sharpening their perception in art and other areas. The importance of observation, emphasized by figures like Joseph Bell, extends beyond art to fields like medicine. As students practice, life drawing becomes easier and more enjoyable.

Line is the most fundamental element of art. It is important for art students to understand the uses of line when it comes to the creation of strong works of art.

Our unit of cross-contour and planar structure taught students contour lines describe edges, form, and volume. These lines can follow planes of form, moving around and across objects as well as through them, much like a topographical map.

100 Neediest Cases

Raising Awareness

For 70 years, the 100 Neediest Cases campaign has supported thousands of St. Louis families during the holidays. Since 1954, local organizations have adopted cases, donating essentials and gifts. With the partnership of United Way and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, annual donations now total $1.3 million. High school and college students create artwork to accompany the stories, using a scientific problem-solving approach to connect with readers and make an impact.

Creating with Color

In Drawing, students learned color theory and scumbling, a technique that creates depth through circular marks and smooth transitions between values. Color theory helps mix colors for pleasing combinations and depth in the artwork.

Accurate representation of light relies on understanding human anatomy, psychology, and the laws of physics. When light is used effectively with color and value, it conveys mood and creates a strong emotional impact on viewers.

In this lesson, students will use line and gesture to quickly capture form and block in shadows for a bold statement, creating the illusion of space. Ink, a challenging medium, requires careful control of light and dark placement, pen work, and washes.

The appeal of ink drawing lies in its organized yet unpredictable results. This exercise helps students become familiar with the subject before transitioning to easier media like pastel or charcoal.
